Eczema Causes
So what has brought
about this momentous increase in allergies and Eczema in the last 20 years or
so?
Environmental Factors. The
amount of toxins we are exposed to in every day life has increased momentously.
We are exposed to literally hundreds of chemical irritants every day, in our
food, our environment, kitchen cupboards and in our bathrooms, even in our
drinking water, see page 5. If you are an Atopic Eczema sufferer you are already
of a sensitive disposition, as for around 70 % of sufferers there is a family
history of Eczema, asthma and/or hay fever.
There are many other substances in common chemicals in the home that may cause
sensitivities, including ammonia, chlorine, rubber or latex is also known to be
a problematic, especially amongst health workers who frequently wear latex
gloves. This is covered in much more depth in
Solve Eczema Naturally, Chapter 1.
Eczema and Diet. Some
experts attribute increases in childhood allergies and Asthma over the past 20
years to diet, as well as an over-exposure to antibiotics – both those
prescribed and those present in animal products.
There are certain foods
that often trigger Eczema. These are typically dairy foods, especially cow’s
milk, eggs, wheat, refined sugar and alcohol. Caffeine upsets some suffers. You
may find that one day you can eat as you like and when your skin is already
irritable even the smell of coffee in Starbucks will leave you itching and
heading for the door! Much more information in Chapter 10, of
Solve Eczema Naturally.
Eczema Stress. Your
emotional state will have a direct effect on your skin. A friend once told me
that I was “making myself red” as talked about something that really upset me.
I’ve found when I need to change something in my life my skin is almost always
disrupted and oversensitive. I have learnt to ask myself what do I need to
change – my diet, attitude to something, the work I’m doing and it has been all
of these that have upset my equilibrium at different times and set of my early
warning system.
Inherited Tendencies are
thought to be connected to an imbalance in the immune function. This is an
allergic or excessive response to environmental substances such as house dust or
yeast present on the skin.
Eczema sufferers have
mutations in a gene that controls filaggrin, a protein that is involved with
formation of the skin barrier. Mutations in the gene are extremely common,
occurring in approximately 9% of individuals from European populations. These
mutations are a major risk factor for the development of Atopic dermatitis. It
is hoped that this discovery will lead to the development of Eczema treatments
that don’t suppress the immune system and can restore the barrier function of
the skin.
